GM recalls over 300,000 2009-2010 Chevrolet Impala units



General Motors said today it is recalling 322,409 units of the Chevrolet Impala from the 2009 and 2010 model year to inspect for a small number of vehicles whose front seat belt webbing may not have been properly secured to the lap belt anchor pretensioner mounted to the side of the seat nearest the door.

“Vehicles with this condition may have an anchor that can separate in a crash, and therefore may not meet the anchor strength requirements of the U.S. and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard that covers seat belt assembly anchorages” GM said in a statement.

“The safety belt may not restrain the occupant as intended during a crash, which could result in a injury to the occupant,” said the NHTSA on its website.

To fix the issue dealers will inspect both front seat belts for proper installation of anchors to pretensioners and, if necessary, reinstall the anchors. Customers will be notified on or around Oct. 25 by mail to bring their vehicles in free inspection. Any fixes will be done for free. Chrysler recalls over 26,000 vehicles to repair power steering systems

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced today that Chrysler is recalling a total of 26,397 vehicles to inspect and repair power steering systems that could cause a fire.

The recall consists of certain model year 2010 Chrysler Sebring, 300, Charger (LX) and Dodge Challenger (LC), Dodge Avenger (JS) and Journey (JC). The recall also consists some model year 2011 Dodge Ram light duty pickup (DS) vehicles.

Chrysler said that some of these vehicles may experience a separation at the crimped end of the power steering pressure hose assembly. Leaked Power steering fluid onto the hot engine components could cause a fire.

The safety recall is expected to start later this month. Dealers will inspect and replace the power steering pressure hose free of charge. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

Niet alleen Chrysler:

Volvo recalling 9,746 vehicles due to driver airbag issue



The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced today that Volvo is recalling 9,746 2010-2011 S80, XC70, model year 2011 XC60 AND model year 2010 V70 vehicles. According to the NHTSA, there may be an intermittent fault in the driver’s airbag clockspring wiring connector for the supplemental restraint system.

“In the even of a crash, the driver’s frontal airbag may not deploy as intended or at all, and therefore will not be able to properly protect the driver, increasing the risk of injuries,” NHTSA said.

To fix the issue, dealers will install a metal shim in the driver’s air bag clockspring wiring connector. This service will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to start on or before Oct. 29, 2010. Owners can call Volvo at 1-800-458-1552 for more info.

Toyota recalls 1.53 million vehicles globally, 740,000 recalled in U.S.



It’s been a while since we’ve head about any crazy Toyota recalls, but just as when things seemed to be getting better for the Japanese automaker, it announced a recall of 1.53 million Lexus, Avalon and other models, mostly in the U.S. and Japan, for brake fluid and fuel pump problems.

In the United States, Toyota is conducting a voluntary safety recall of 740,000 vehicles including – 2005 through 2006 Avalon, 2004 through 2006 Highlander (non Hybrid) and Lexus RX330, and 2006 Lexus GS300, IS250, and IS350 vehicles sold in the United States to address the possibility that a small amount of the brake fluid could slowly leak from the brake master cylinder, resulting in illumination of the brake warning lamp.

Here is a complete breakdown of the issue by Toyota:

The Toyota genuine brake fluid used during vehicle assembly for vehicles sold in the United States contains polymers. The polymers act as lubricants for certain brake system components. If during vehicle maintenance, brake fluid is used that does not contain such polymers or only small amounts, a part of the internal rubber seal (brake master cylinder cup) located at the end of the brake master cylinder piston may become dry and may curl during movement of the piston. If this occurs, a small amount of the brake fluid could slowly leak from the brake master cylinder into the brake booster, resulting in illumination of the brake warning lamp. If the brake warning lamp has illuminated and the vehicle continues to be operated without refilling the master cylinder brake fluid reservoir, the driver will begin to notice a spongy or soft brake pedal feel and braking performance may gradually decline.

Toyota will start notifying owners in early Nov. 2010. To fix the issue Toyota and Lexus dealers will replace the brake master cylinder cup with a newly designed one at no charge to the vehicle owners. Overigens vind ik het toch wel apart dat hiervoor meteen weer zo'n massale terugroepactie gehouden wordt, blijkbaar gaat er als het probleem optreedt gewoon een waarschuwingslampje branden. En als mensen dat dna toch negeren is het toch hun eigen verantwoordelijkheid? Ik ga er tenminste van uit dat je dan niet na een paar kilometer al helemaal zonder remmen zou komen te zitten.
