General Motors announced today that it is recalling 14,245 Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne models with V8 engines from the 2010 and 2011 model years. The recall is being conducted because the vehicles can have a starter or alternator cable that comes in contact with the power steering return line.

“Such contact could cause the cable to wear through the power steering line causing a power steering fluid leak and a loss of power steering,” GM said in a statement. “Contact also may wear away the cable protective wrap, conduit and wire insulation, so there is metal-to-metal contact, which could result in battery drain. If the exposed battery cable separates from the power-steering line, there could be enough sparks for a hole to be melted in the line. If the power steering fluid contacts hot metal parts of the engine, there could be a fire.”

To fix the issue, dealers will inspect harness routing and correct as needed to eliminate contact with the power steering line. GM said that the recall has caused four fires but no injuries. The Detroit automaker will hold unsold models of these cars on dealer lots until they are repaired.

Letters to customers will be mailed Nov. 19.

Nissan North America announced today that it is recalling 604,500 vehicles to fix an issue with the steering columns and battery cables. Around 515,000 units are being recalled in the United States while the remaining will occur in Canada, Latin American and African countries.

“At Nissan, we’re committed to the safety and satisfaction of our customers. We regret any inconveniences that our customers may experience as we address these issues,” said Kevin Martin, vice president of Total Customer Satisfaction for NNA.

The recall includes the Frontier, Xterra and Sentra. In the U.S. approximately 240,000 Frontier, 261,000 Xterra and 14,000 Sentra vehicles are being recalled.

“Nissan recently discovered that in certain rare instances, the lower steering column joint on the affected Frontier and Xterra vehicles can develop corrosion that limits the movement of the joint,” Nissan said in a statement. “If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition it may, in an extreme case, lead to cracking of the steering shaft.”

  • Model Year 2002 through 2004 Nissan Frontier vehicles manufactured from July 9, 2001 to October 20, 2004 in Smyrna, Tenn., for the North American markets
  • Model Year 2002 through 2004 Nissan Xterras manufactured from July 9, 2001 to January 6, 2005 in Smyrna, Tenn., for the North American markets
  • Nissan Frontier vehicles manufactured from November 30, 2001 to June 26, 2008 in Curitiba, Brazil for South and Central American markets
  • Nissan Xterra vehicles manufactured from February 17, 2003 to June 13, 2008 in Curitiba, Brazil for South and Central American markets
  • Nissan Sentra vehicles manufactured from May 15, 2010 to July 8, 2010 in Aguascalientes, Mexico for global markets

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that Jaguar is recalling 6,745 units of the 2012-2011 XJ sedan over defective windshield wipers.

The NHTSA said that vehicles affected have an issue with windshield wipers not being properly installed or synchronized. In certain XJ units, the wipers could lose synchronization and clash against each other, resulting in one or more wipers detaching.

Jaguar will start notifying owners on Dec. 13 and dealers will repair the securing nut to correct the problem if necessary. Owners can call Jaguar at 800-452-4827 or NHTSA’s vehicle safety hot line at 888-327-4236.

Refresher: The 2010 Jaguar XJ is available in four trim-levels including XJ XJL, XJ/XJL Supercharged and XJ/XJL Supercharged. The lineup consists of three powertrains including a 385-hp naturally aspirated 5.0L AJ-V8 GEN III (available on the XJ and XJL models), the 470-hp 5.0L Supercharged AJ-V8 GEN III (available on the XJ/XJL Supercharged) and the 510-hp 5.0L Supercharged 5.0L AJ-V8 GEN III (available on the XJ/XJL Supersport). Prices start at $72,700 on the base XJ and $79,700 on the XJL. The XJ Supercharged and the XJL Supercharged models start at $87,700 and $90,700 respectively. The XJ Supersport and XJL Supersport start at $110,200 and $113,200 respectively.

General Motors confirmed today that it is recalling 192,676 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon regular cab and extended cab pickup trucks from the 2004-2011 model years and certain 2007-2008 Isuzu i280 and i370 vehicles equipped with a front 60/40 split bench seat.

The recall is being conducted because the child restraint top tether anchor for the front center seat position in these vehicles is not accessible as required by federal motor vehicle safety standards.

“Without the top tether anchor, the child restraint may not be properly secured,” GM said in a statement. “Though the safety standards require the presence of the tether anchorage, GM strongly discourages the use of the center seat position for a child seat because of its proximity to the air bag in a crash.”

GM said it knows of no crashes or injuries related to this condition.

Volvo is recalling 6,046 2011 model year vehicles due to potential engine stalling, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The 2011 model year vehicles include the Volvo S80, S60, XC70 and XC60.

“The software calibration for the fuel cutoff functionality in the engine control module is too sensitive,” said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. “Sudden engine stall could occur, increasing the risk of a crash.”

To fix the issue all the recalled models will get an updated software from Volvo free of charge. Volvo will start notifying owners starting Dec. 10. Owners can call Volvo at 800-458-1552 or NHTSA’s hot line at 888-327-4236.

Toyota said that it plans to fix about 650,000 Prius models worldwide to repair a coolant pump glitch that could cause the car to overheat and lose power. The repair (not a recall) covers the Prius from model year 2004 to 2007 and consists of 378,000 units in the United States.

The Japanese automaker said that the design of the electric water pump may let air bubbles enter the system, slowing coolant circulation which may cause the components to heat up. The heating of components could trigger a warning light and if it is ignored the Prius could overheat and go into “fail-safe” mode where engine power is reduced.

Why is not being called a recall? Well, some major automakers often repair campaigns that are separate from safety recalls filed with U.S. regulators in cases where they determine that a defect does not present a safety risk. Toyota said it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries from problems with the pump.

Toyota will begin notifying customers in the United States in early December.

Voor Volvo is dit ook niet de eerste keer.

Is dat zo? Hoe vaak zullen dergelijke, ongevaarlijke gebreken gewoon genegeerd worden (of pas aangepakt worden na een flinke rel via bijvoorbeeld Radar) of stilletjes bij een onderhoudsbeurt verholpen worden? Ik krijg de indruk dat de hele autowereld zo langzaam aan totaal paranoïde aan het worden is. Als je maar lang genoeg zoekt zal elke auto ooit geproduceerd wel enkele ontwerpfouten bevatten.

Here is some recall news that you probably don’t care about… unless you own a 2010-2011 Land Rover LR2. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Land Rover is recalling 3,000 LR2 models from the 2010-2011 model year.

“The shorting bar in the clock spring may become disconnected when the driver’s air bag module connector is installed,” NHTSA said in a statement. As a result, “the driver’s frontal airbag may not deploy as intended or at all and therefore will not be able to properly protect the driver, increasing the risk of injury.”

To fix the issue, Land Rover dealers will install a spacer into the driver’s airbag clock spring harness connector free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on or before Dec. 13, 2010. Owners can call Land Rover at 800-637-6837.

Jij noemt ze ongevaarlijk en op het eerste gezicht lijkt dat ook zo. Mocht een Prius-rijder echter wel het signaal negeren dan kan oververhitting leiden tot verlies van vermogen. We hebben al genoeg kop-staartbotsingen denk ik.

Tsja, zo bekeken is elk gebrek gevaarlijk. Zo ongeveer elke VW-TDI van begin deze eeuw wilde nog wel eens op een willekeurig moment stilvallen, probleempje met de verstuivers, even een kwartiertje de boel laten afkoelen en hij doet het weer gewoon. Datzelfde probleem heb ik van 7 verschillende mensen in m'n eigen omgeving gehoord (Golf, 2x VW Sharan, Passat, Audi A4, Seat Ibiza, Skoda Fabia) en die kregen allemaal bij hun garage te horen dat die motoren daar nu eenmaal wel eens last van hebben. Niks waarschuwingslampje vooraf, hij valt gewoon plotseling stil (en je stuur- en rembekrachtiging dus ook). Dus vele malen gevaarlijker dan dit gevalletje bij Toyota, wat alleen door pure nalatigheid van de bestuurder gevaar zou kunnen opleveren. Maar ooit iets over een terugroepactie gehoord? Of op z'n minst actie van een of andere consumentenorganisatie? Niks, nakkes, nada.

Nee, dan blijft mijn eerdere stelling staan: als elk ontwerpgebrek een terugroepactie zou moeten opleveren moet ELKE auto die er rondrijdt nog heel wat tijd in de garage doorbrengen.
