egmCarTech schreef:2010 SEMA: Toyota Tundra Sportsman is is everything an adventurous man needs

For a long time, American consumers considered Toyotas strong compacts and midsize sedans and nothing more. Toyota has been working hard to change that perception and make a name for itself in more niche fields. It took another step at the 2010 SEMA Show by unveiling the Toyota Tundra Sportsman, a project designed in collaboration with Bass Pro Shops. Both utility and visual upgrades make this the car both Toyota and Bass Pro Shops feel will best serve a consumer of how the two companies complete an outdoor sports experience.

A three inch suspension lift makes space for 18 inch Teflon-coated wheels with Mud grapplers, with the power from a 5.7 L V8 going to those wheels and waste from the engine going out through the truck bed to make the car better at crossing water. The truck bed is the focal point of the vehicle: it has everything an outdoorsman needs and wants in a home base and a transport mobile. Areas for meal preparation and sleeping arrangements are laid out alongside holding rosters for firearms and bow and arrow items, along with cleaning items. A small kitchen, complete with stove and sink, complements the collapsible 86 foot platform for sleeping quarters and a two person tent.

And this truck possesses good looks too, both inside and out. A variety of gray and black colors was used to give the vehicle a tough, understated look on the road that wouldn’t wear out or stand out in the wilderness. The Tundra Sportsman also has a touch of matte paint to keep the car unique, and a front bar to both give a stronger impression and to help the car while offroading. On the inside, electronic systems like GPS and weather devices complement new bucket seats in waterproff material and camouflage floor mats. The speakers have also been pumped up, to make them strong enough to provide a comfortable outdoor experience. All in all, the Tundra Sportsman seems like a pretty complete package for any hunter, daily driver, or mixture of the two. With Bass Pro Shops’ outdoor experience behind it, it seems safe to say that the quality of the material and execution of concepts was well-done. The concept pickup will do tours around Bass Pro Shops after the SEMA Show- it may even be at a store near you!

egmCarTech schreef:2010 SEMA: Four Wheeler Toyota 4Runner Backcountry

Reading a car blog, people come to appreciate the machines for their intrinsic value: their beauty and their speed. But it’s important too to remember that people use cars as tools to explore their passions. One example of this is Four Wheeler Magazine’s Project Toyota 4Runner Backcountry, which debuted at SEMA 2010. This modified vehicle has the intentions of giving explorative individuals the freedom to drive around a relatively normal Toyota 4Runner during the day, and then use the Backcountry’s expansions on the 4Runner’s signature strengths- reliability, practicality and safety.

The suspension has been lifted by 2.5 inches, meaning that the car can carry more equipment, and that larger tires have been fitted on. Driving lights and a front bumper further the element of safety. The car gets a front air locker in addition to the stock rear locker; if the car gets stuck anyway, the car has a winch that allows for self-recovery. A roof rack, used to hold extra lights, a tent, and an awning, mean that the car can both carry more than just what’s in the car and give extra lighting in the wilderness.

There are also creature comforts for people in the car: an extra fuel tank means that the car can carry a water tank for doing dishes, washing hands, of even showering. Cobra CB radios mean that communication shouldn’t be a problem, and a Garmin GPS inside the car mean that hopefully, you’ll never be lost. The rear even has a fridge for perishable food items! Furthermore, these systems are kept separate from the factory power and managed through a simple board, meaning that factory electronics failures don’t necessarily put the stranded camper out of luck. A rear-mounted power tank also means that air can get put into the tires, so flats probably won’t be a huge problem. Four Wheeler seems to have thought of everything with the Backcountry. By providing this new modification package, they’ve made it much, much easier to follow the Boy Scout Motto: “Be Prepared.”

egmCarTech schreef:2010 SEMA: Kia Forte Hybrid Concept shows green doesn’t have to be boring

One of the most unexpected debuts at the 2010 SEMA Show was the Kia Forte Hybrid Concept. Kia said that the concept proves that a compact hybrid sedan doesn’t have to be all that boring and we kind of agree.

Produced by Kinetic Motorsports, the Kia Forte Hybrid Concept combines a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine fueled by liquefied petroleum gas (propane) and lithium polymer battery pack. Kia didn’t provide any technical specs so we’re not really sure how fuel-efficient the concept is.

The Kia Forte Hybrid Concept also gets some body panel enhancements, a lowered stance, aluminum alloy wheels and low-rolling resistance tires, interior panel treatments feature custom enhancements and a 1200 watt Infinity 2 audio system.
